How to Bind a Quilt: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Binding frames your quilt and protects the raw edges of the quilt sandwich from wear. A well-executed binding lies flat, covers the stitching line evenly, and creates crisp corners that hold their shape through years of use.

What Is Quilt Binding?

Quilt binding is a strip of fabric that encases the outer edges of a quilt. It secures the top, batting, and backing layers together along the perimeter. Most quilters use double-fold binding, sometimes called French-fold binding, because the folded edge provides two layers of fabric at the edge for maximum durability. Single-fold binding is an option for miniature quilts or wall hangings that will not receive heavy handling, but it offers less protection for bed quilts.

Tools and Supplies You Need

Calculating and Cutting Binding Strips

How Much Binding Do You Need?

Measure the perimeter of your quilt by adding the length and width together and multiplying by two. Add 15 to 20 inches to this total to account for corners, the joining seam, and the final overlap. For example, a 60-inch by 80-inch quilt has a 280-inch perimeter. Adding 20 inches gives you 300 inches of required binding.

Divide the total inches needed by the usable width of your fabric (usually 40 to 42 inches after removing selvages). Round up to the next whole number. This tells you how many strips to cut. For the 300-inch example using 40-inch wide fabric: 300 divided by 40 equals 7.5, so you cut 8 strips.

Straight Grain vs. Bias Binding

Straight-grain binding is cut parallel to the selvage. It uses fabric efficiently and is perfectly stable for quilts with straight edges. Bias binding is cut at a 45-degree angle to the selvage. It has stretch, which is necessary for quilts with curved edges or scalloped borders. For standard rectangular quilts, straight-grain binding is the standard choice. Joining Strips into One Continuous Length

Lay two strips right sides together at a 90-degree angle, overlapping the ends. The strips should form a V shape. Sew a diagonal seam from valley to valley across the overlap. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch and press the seam open. Pressing open reduces bulk at the seam junction. Repeat until all strips are joined. Finally, press the entire length in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, matching the raw edges precisely.

Attaching the Binding to the Quilt Front

Leave a 10-inch tail unsewn at the start. Align the raw edges of the binding with the raw edge of the quilt top. Start sewing in the middle of one side, not at a corner. Use a 1/4-inch seam allowance. A walking foot helps maintain an even feed here. Stop stitching 1/4 inch before the corner edge. Backstitch, then cut the thread.

Mitering the Corners

This step creates the signature angled fold. Follow these steps precisely:

  1. Fold the binding strip straight up, away from the quilt, creating a 45-degree fold at the corner. The raw edge of the binding should now extend straight out from the quilt edge you just sewed.
  2. Fold the binding straight down over itself, aligning the new fold with the raw edge of the next quilt side. The folded edge should sit exactly even with the raw edge of the side you just finished.
  3. Pin or clip the fold in place.
  4. Start sewing at the very top edge of the new side. Backstitch and continue down the side.

Repeat this process at all four corners. When you approach the starting tail, stop sewing about 10 to 12 inches before the start. You now have two tails to join.

Joining the Binding Ends

Lay the starting tail flat along the quilt edge. Lay the ending tail on top, overlapping the start. Measure an overlap distance equal to the width of your binding strips (2.25 inches if you cut 2.25-inch strips). Mark this point on the ending tail. Cut the ending tail at this mark.

Open both tails. Place them right sides together at a 90-degree angle, just like joining the strips originally. Sew diagonally from valley to valley. Check the fit against the quilt before trimming. It should lie flat without puckering or gaping. Trim the seam to 1/4 inch, press open, refold the binding, and finish stitching the gap closed.

Finishing: Hand Stitching vs. Machine Stitching

Now the binding is attached to the front. You must secure the folded edge to the back of the quilt.

Traditional Hand Stitching

Thread a needle with a single strand of thread about 18 inches long. Knot the end. Bring the needle up through the backing and batting only, catching just a few threads of the folded binding edge. Use a blind stitch (slip stitch): insert the needle into the backing directly behind where the thread emerged, travel 1/8 inch through the layers, and bring the needle out through the binding fold again. Stitches should be invisible from the front and nearly invisible on the back. Take a small backstitch every few inches to secure the thread. Full Machine Binding

For a faster finish, stitch the binding down by machine. From the front of the quilt, stitch in the ditch (the seam line between the quilt top and the binding) or just inside the binding on the quilt top. The goal is to catch the folded edge on the back automatically. This requires consistent seam allowance width during the first attachment step.
